As soon as Celeste screams at us to run, Kaz spins around, and our looks of devastation are the same. We thought we had her. Before words can be exchanged, Kade strolls into the room. Followed by Raider and twenty or so other dudes.

Kade has a small smile on his face, his shoulders are relaxed, and when he sees his mother tied to a chair, he doesn’t flinch. A shiver travels down my spine, and I’m waiting for some sign from Kade about what we’re going to do to get out of here. When his father walks up beside him and puts his arm on his shoulder, I get a little concerned.

Raider gives me his biggest grin and opens his stupid fucking mouth. “Well, boys, you have a rare opportunity right now. Forget this Sunny nonsense once and for all, pledge your loyalty to me, and after a few days of beatings to reorient you, all will be forgiven. What do you say?”

I don’t even try to hold in my laughter. “Are you fucking serious? I’d rather follow the shit I took this morning than you. I’m done pretending. We know what you did, and there is no getting past that. Ever. As for Sunny, we will find her, and you’re going to pay for everything you’ve done to us with your life, you slimy motherfucker.” I didn’t need to spit at him, but it felt good. Sunny would like it.

Raider shifts his stance to look at Kaz now. “Very well. And you, Kaz? What are your thoughts on the matter?”

“I’m with my brothers. Go fuck yourself.” Kaz smiles back at him.

“Well, that’s a bit of a dilemma now, isn’t it? You see, Wrex is against me, but Kade? He’s on the winning team. Aren’t you, boy?” Raider glances over his shoulder and tilts his head.

“That’s right, Father. It’s a shame, guys. I had such high hopes for you, but I can’t say I’m surprised.” Kade cracks his knuckles and rolls his shoulders.

I’m trying not to grind all my teeth to powder, but when I look over at Kaz, I can see his game face is on, which oddly doesn’t calm me at the moment. Putting my entire focus back on Kade and the men behind him, I straighten up and give him the bro nod. Bring it on. I sneak one last look over at Kaz, and out of my peripheral vision, I see sparks on the ropes holding Celeste to the chair. Time for that hero shit, I guess.

Raider takes the smallest step behind his men, and Kade lunges at me. I see it coming, so I have enough time to block his punch and throw him down on the ground. It only takes him a second to hop up and come at me again. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Kaz helping Celeste out of the chair and moving her behind him.

Unfortunately, that split second gives Kade the advantage, and not only do I take a hit directly to the nose, he then gets behind me and wraps his arm around my throat.
