Chapter 7 – Dawn

Days passed without a word from Richter, and in her annoyance, Dawn ruled over the Coven's Call and the Dark Rose coven with an iron fist. Recruitment was up—the Dark Rose had a reputation of only turning those with terminal illnesses into vampires to save their lives—and the productivity of those in the coven increased for fear of earning her wrath.

There were fewer parties, but instead of the coven becoming fed up with so much work, an atmosphere of appreciation developed. Everyone was kept busy, improving the coven, and was rewarded with time off. It seemed a better compromise than before, where Dawn had let the vampires more or less do whatever they wanted so long as they didn't get in her way.

With Cyrus' help, they planned the club's event schedule for the next month. Drinking games with prizes, dancers, and another magic show—the latter was highly requested after the success of the last. Every time it was brought up, though, Dawn inevitably thought about Richter. He was the star of the show, a beacon of light in her thoughts, a constant reminder that he had been here, and now he wasn't. Because of her.

She sat at one of the club's high tables, chewing a pen while reviewing the final schedule. Everything was according to her notes, except that Cyrus had slipped in the magic show in the middle of April, probably thinking she wouldn't notice.

"I told you," she said, "we can't do another one."

Cyrus pushed a lock of dark brown hair from his face. "And why not? After the smashing success of the first, I would think you'd want to keep up morale in the same fashion. With some minor tweaks, the whole show will be an even bigger hit."

"It can't be done."

At the club entrance, right before the VIP section, Dawn had installed Richter's metal statue as a permanent fixture. Maybe that had been a bad idea, too, because now whenever she looked at it, she thought of him all over again. Richter was right that there'd been something between them. A spark that could have grown into something more. They were both immortal and enjoyed each other's company, and together, maybe they wouldn't have been so lonely.

How could Richter not see that she'd only been trying to speed up the inevitable? There was no harm done. She hadn't manipulated him into feeling anything that wasn't already there. They'd both wanted it. And he got just as much out of it as she had.

But Richter had said that his memories weren't quite right. There were missing pieces. That never should have happened. All that Dawn intended to do was amplify their feelings, to keep him focused on her for a while so they could stay together without interference and get to know each other better. Never had she intended to steal his memories or mess with his head in that way.

Something had gone wrong, and Dawn couldn't explain why. And being unable to explain why drastically reduced her chances of fixing it.
