Chapter 6

The next day, Quinn had three appointments scheduled at the clinic. If nothing else, she felt the distraction would do her good. One appointment was with Agnes Meek whom she hadn’t seen in a while. She was curious as to what had brought her back.

Her first appointment was with Cavan Lynch. She made a little face as she read the name. She hoped he had brought his wife with him this time. Quinn, got up and gave her potted geranium a drink from the little blue watering can she kept in the office. The plant sat in her window, which overlooked the street. Quinn watched the people passing by for a moment before realizing she was just stalling. With a sigh, she walked to the door and called Cavan Lynch’s name.

Cavan entered with a woman of about his age. She seemed a little hesitant, maybe even frightened, as she walked into Quinn’s office. Quinn hated that she wasn’t at all surprised. Cavan wasn’t the first man who had come to therapy and promptly blamed his wife for everything that was wrong in their life. Still, best not to start forming opinions this early in treatment.

“Hello,” Quinn referred to the folder she was holding, “Murielle, is it? Do you mind if I call you by your first name?”

Murielle seemed to relax a little. “Oh, no, of course not, please do.” Murielle looked around the room and then at her husband, before continuing. “I’m so glad to meet you. I have wanted to seek therapy for years. Cavan and I…well, we just don’t seem to get along.”

“I get along just fine.” Cavan spoke in a loud voice that had startled both Quinn and Murielle.

“You really don’t need to speak that loudly, this is quite a small office.” Quinn gave Cavan a stern look.

“Well, I’m just saying, the first time I bring her here, and she’s already making things up. I knew this would be a waste of time. If she just didn’t get mad all the time, everything would be fine.”

“But, I don’t get mad all the time, Cavan, I seldom get mad at all. Why do you say things like that?”

“You see what I mean, Doc? Forever disagreeing with me. The most disagreeable woman I’ve ever met.”

Good grief, thought Quinn, this man deflects everything. Some people spent their lives accusing others of their own behavior while not seeing that behavior at all in themselves. Quinn glanced at the clock and then waded in. It would be a long hour!

Quinn went to the break room at the clinic after her session. She reached into the small frig to retrieve the orange soda she had brought with her from home. Pouring the contents of the can into a coffee cup, she then headed back to her office. Sitting down with a sigh, she began reviewing the chart of her next patient. Well, this was interesting. Her next patient was a priest and, it seemed, his parish was the very one Rose had worked in all those years ago.
