CHAPTER 6

SHARON

Sharon ran her hands over her dreads and stared at her reflection. The small mirror above the sink in her new apartment was rusty and old, but she could see herself just fine. She knew she was too much color for that old brown apartment, but it was now her home, and she liked the independence. Plus, she could afford to pay for it with her own salary, which was liberating.

She’d spent all night thinking about Owen’s proposition. During the night, she kept thinking that it wasn’t real—just a figment of her imagination. But she’d never dreamed of this. She’d never even thought she could have her own non-profit, but now she had all that within her reach. She could make so much of a difference in the world and in people’s lives if she could take the plunge and give the man the marriage he needed.

If she agreed, it would be a purely selfless decision.

His intensions were purely business. All he wanted was a means to get his rightful inheritance. It made sense; they each got what they wanted . . . but how was the whole being married part going to work out with living arrangements? He didn’t expect his wife to clean and get groceries, but he would certainly expect his wife to live with him in that high-rise penthouse. What then, separate bedrooms? She doubted it.

If she agreed to one full year of marriage, she couldn’t really imagine him going out and sleeping around. He just wasn’t that kind of guy. She’d seen him lying drunk and in pain after a woman cheated on him. That man would never sleep with anyone else while he was married to her. Was she sure she wanted to subject him to a year of celibacy and sexual depravation? And herself? She didn’t quite like that idea. It wasn’t good for him, or her. And besides, she couldn’t deny that he was a virile, wonderful man. Would it do a lot of harm asking him what he wants and expects?

For the first time in her life, Sharon was extremely confused on how to go on about this business. She loved taking risks and being spontaneous. That was her. Throwing caution to the wind and not knowing nor bothering to think what would happen next. But this time, with this man, she was tempted to ensure she was prepared for battle. She had to know what he was thinking and what he expected. And then she was going to control all the variables. There was too much at stake. Everything had to be discussed and agreed upon beforehand.

She didn’t want to risk any emotional trauma from this marriage. If the rules were set out clearly from the get-go, there was little probability of emotional carnage. Right? She was not going to live with scarring for the rest of her life because she needed a non-profit. She couldn’t keep others warm by setting her own self on fire.
