CHAPTER 9

I still don’t know how we managed to get into our car, after disabling the witch-finder’s van, rocketing down the road like the shades of hell were after us. They would be, as soon as they recovered. We’d just won the first round.

A quick glance at Sabina in the back seat revealed tear streaks drying on her face as she braced her arm against the car’s motion. “We need medical care,” I said, turning back to Alex whose face was strained and closed down.

“That’s the first place they’ll be looking for us.”

“She needs help. Now.”

Alex cast a look in the rear view mirror, eyeing Sabina. “Can you hang on till St. Louis?”

What? “That’s two hours, not counting traffic.”

My best friend shot me a look hot enough to fry leather. “We stop. They find us. She’s going to be in a whole lot more hurt. Besides—”

“Besides what?” I practically chewed up and spit out the words.

“Besides, she’s an under-aged minor and none of us are her legal guardians.”

Oh for love of mercy. Why hadn’t I thought of that? Maybe because I wasn’t used to kidnapping minors.

I said nothing though, just glared at Alex, biting my tongue till I could taste a drop of blood.

“What?” she snarled.

I glanced at my side window, watching the rolling countryside of Missouri whisk past. We were heading toward Columbia, the next large city. “Nothing.”

“Oh, no you don’t,” she said, obviously as frustrated and scared as I was. “Kelly McAllister, you’re just dying to tell me something. What?”

“Funny you should use that very word,” my tone dripped venom. “You do know you could have gotten us all killed, gotten them killed back there.” I used my finger to stab the air behind me when what I wanted to do with it was stab Alex. Right on her forehead. “You and your ignoring the threat until it came up and bit our fannies.”

“Fannies? Is that teach speak for asses? Because I sure as hell didn’t see you doing any of your disappearing act when it could have actually helped. Oh, no, Miss I’m-too-nice-and-perfect-for-everyone, call it like it is. You screwed up just as much as I did.”

“What?” The word sounded like I was strangling a cat. “This is my fault? You were the one who knew a witch-finder was after you. You were the one who ignored the calls from your brother warning you. You—“

She cut me a glance so lethal I barely recognized it. “How’d you know Van was calling me?”

Talk about changing the conversation a hundred and eighty degrees. “Because he told me.”

Her eyes narrowed as I looked away. “And why would Van tell you? He had no idea I’d be with you.”

“How the hell do I know? Maybe, when you wouldn’t answer his calls he dialed all of your friends until he found one stupid enough to answer the phone and admit they were with you!”

When in doubt, prevaricate. It’s a fancy word for lie, which I knew better than to do. Okay, it wasn’t my finest moment.
