Use Stock Screeners to Search Out the Right Picks

Over time, your pre-investment research should become more exacting and complex. As you gain in proficiency, you should strive to build a portfolio that outperforms the indexes that best reflect your holdings. If you are concentrated in small-cap companies, for instance, then you will want to evaluate your performance alongside the Russell 2000 index. If you are more of a large-cap investor, then you will look to the S&P 500 as a reference point. One of the first realizations made by investors on their way to becoming highly competent is that there exists a wide universe of stocks and other securities out there of which you have no personal knowledge. Many of these stocks will quietly outperform the market, generating fantastic returns for those few fortunate enough to take note of them.

One highly efficient way of getting lesser-known but promising stocks to appear on your radar is through the use of a stock screener. These tools are offered by brokerages and other companies, sometimes for free and sometimes for a price. Screeners allow investors to filter their view of various stocks.
