Alternatively, a very similar low-cost portfolio could be put together at Fidelity using their “Spartan” index funds:

Spartan Total Market Index Fund,

Spartan International Index Fund, and

Spartan U.S. Bond Index Fund.

There’s little need to complicate things beyond that. In either case, your portfolio would be extremely diversified, consisting of more than a thousand investment-grade bonds and thousands of stocks from several different countries. And you would be doing an excellent job of minimizing your investment costs. As of this writing, each of the funds mentioned above has an expense ratio of 0.22% or less.
