Travel & Vacations

Vacations are breaks from your everyday life. Anything you do that is different from your regular life is technically a holiday. Marti can feel as if she is on vacation if she checks into a hotel in her own hometown. To her it’s a holiday if she orders room service, glimpses a fresh landscape from the window, and selects in-room movies.

In her first book, The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World (2002), Marti describes a vacation we took together where we stopped in Leadville, Colorado. As you may have read in the book, Mike thought spending more than a week in one small city was way too long, and he wanted to drive somewhere—anywhere—for more stimulation. Marti thought it was way too short, since there were so many interesting cemeteries and lead mines to visit.

Since we have such different tastes in holidays, we have compromised during our forty-plus married years by taking turns picking vacations. This offers us new and unique trips that we otherwise would not have picked for ourselves. This year, Marti chose a historic barge cruise. Since she watched a documentary about barges on the History Channel, she has always wanted to spend a leisurely holiday floating through the canals of Alsace-Lorraine in France.

The brochure says our charming, intimate vessel will be burning up the canals at three to five miles an hour. Mike was relieved to find out that he can bike or walk alongside the barge. He had been a bit concerned about being able to stand upright in what is referred to as our “compact” cabin (the tour operators recommend a duffle bag instead of a suitcase—yet another indication of just how small our cabin may be). When we told another innie-outie couple about our upcoming barge cruise, the introvert said, “Oh, how exciting. Ever since college I have always wanted to take a barge trip.” The outie partner looked at Mike and said, “I hope your marriage survives!”

When you discuss vacation plans it’s important to consider all aspects of traveling. Focus on what each of you brings to the table. Outies usually bring enthusiasm and lots of information about where to go and what to do on vacation. Innies offer thoughtfulness, research ability, time limitations, money requirements, and the ability to foresee difficulties. Most innies need to pay attention to pacing; be sure to plan breaks from your jam-packed travel schedule and fast-paced sightseeing. Many extroverts want to go everywhere and see everything, but it’s important to set priorities and remember that you don’t need to see everything together. You may want to see some sights as a couple, some individually, and some with other traveling companions.

It’s also important to discuss what type of vacation you each want when you’re planning a trip. How much fuel is in your tanks as you start this vacation? Do you need lots of recharging time, or do you need more variety, more action, or a bit of this and a bit
