Suppose q(f) is some non-negative scalar measure of the deviations from smoothness in f; if f is varied until q(f) becomes a minimum, the resulting f may be completely smooth in the sense that q(f) will be zero. Whether a unique f is thereby selected depends on the specific nature of q(f): if for q(f) we use the sum of the squares of the first differences evidently any constant f will give q = 0 and the minimum is not unique. If the expression is used its minimum occurs for the unique choice
