Chapter Eight

Dorran flopped into the seat in the booth the waitress had pointed out. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes. Who knew being a detective was so tiring? The only things he and Eli had done was talk to people and dodge the sheriff, yet Dorran felt like he’d run a marathon. Maybe Eli was right when he said Dorran spent too much time sitting on his ass, although Dorran didn’t see a way out of that considering he worked on his computer all day.

“Tired?” Eli asked as he slid into his seat with more grace than Dorran.

“Dead tired, and we didn’t even find anything. God, this day has been a waste of time and energy.”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

“No? Because from where I stand, we don’t have anything to help Chris. Yeah, he was in the Seven-Eleven, but unless he was there right around the time Lucy was killed, it’s not going to help. Even the chat with Valerie didn’t really help because there’s no way the sheriff is going to take into consideration that Chris might not be the killer.”

“The sheriff, no, but the State Police will.”

“Are they going to take over?”

“Well, they’re going to investigate why the sheriff isn’t doing his job. Even if they don’t investigate Lucy’s murder themselves, they’ll put someone in charge of the investigation.”

“What if they put the sheriff’s deputy in charge, though? I mean, he’s their boss. They’ll do what he wants.”

“Not if he’s being investigated by the State Police. I know this situation isn’t easy, love, but you have to let go. You’re going to drive yourself crazy if you continue thinking about the what-ifs.”

“I just want Chris to go home.”

“I know. I understand. But you can’t obsess over this.”

Dorran understood that, but he wasn’t sure he could stop. Chris wasn’t just another possible killer like he was for Eli. He was Dorran’s brother. “What’s next, then?”

Eli rolled his eyes. “I thought you said you understood?”

“I do, but you know I like to plan.”

“Oh, I do. Well, what’s next is that we’re going to have dinner, and while we eat, we’ll talk about anything but your brother. Then we’ll go back to our room, maybe spend a little time together. Later, we’ll head out to the bar and try talking to the barman.”

Right. It didn’t matter that Dorran was dead tired. They weren’t done yet. They had to do this fast before the sheriff stepped in and told them to fuck off.

“I could do with a nap.”

Eli grinned. “I didn’t exactly have a nap in mind when I said we’d spend time together.”

“Oh, I know.”

Someone stopped by their table, and Dorran looked up, expecting to see their waitress. Instead, Sheriff Boone was looking down at them, his expression cold and hard. Dorran swallowed. In this case, he was more than a little glad to let Eli do the talking.

“Sheriff. What can we do for you?” Eli asked. His voice was steady and severe, but not worried, as if he really didn’t know why the sheriff was there.
