Patrice

That following Saturday could not have come soon enough. I had already put into motion a part of my plan. I was going to leave shortly after I returned from Richmond from visiting with my kids.

I had already packed my bags, all the essentials anyway. I was impatiently riding in the car with my mother and father feeling the awkward stifled silence in the air.

“Is anyone going to tell me what the hell is going on? Ya’ll know I don’t like surprises. Why are we driving all the way to Richmond?” My father had been trying to pry our destination out of me the whole time we were riding.

I must admit, I had punked out. When it came to my father, I was weak. He was the one man who I cared about and didn’t want to hurt intentionally. I knew that it was only going to be a matter of time before I had to tell him, but I wasn’t ready yet. I wished that I could be as hard as I was for the rest of the world with him. I had always been daddy’s little girl. I wasn’t ready to let the title go at the time. I had no choice. Everything was lined up and the cards would fall where they may.

My mother and I kept quiet as though my father hadn’t said anything. I could tell that she was waiting for me to confess, before she had to do it for me. She hated keeping things from my father. We were getting closer to our destination so it really didn’t matter anymore.

My mother looked out the window hoping that I would just come out and say it. I could read her mind. Her body language talked volumes for what her mouth would not say.

“Is anyone going to answer me or do I need to pull this car the hell over until I get some answers?” I knew my father sensed that something wasn’t right. He hardly ever used foul language, however, I had a feeling that harsh words were about to become his good friend.

“Just drive darling. We will be in Richmond before you know it.” My mother responded.

“Pamela, I don’t know what’s going on but I know you know something about it. You are never this quiet, so what’s up?” My father was becoming increasingly impatient. It was about to go down. You know the saying there is no time like the present.

“You have to talk to your daughter if you want some answers. She has to be the one to come out and tell you what’s going on. I don’t know why she is prolonging the inevitable.” I glared at my mother. She had all but ousted me.

What if where we were going had nothing to do with our trip? What if I really just wanted to drive out and enjoy the day with my family? Was that so hard to believe?

“What is your mother talking about, Patrice?” My father asked.

“Daddy, I’d rather show you than tell you.
