I have no idea how much time has passed when I wake up. My eyes are blurry and my body feels like lead. Someone holds a cool cloth to my forehead, taking away some of the heat I still feel.

“Juliette?” My voice is cracked and painful.

“It’s me.” Remy. “I saw your door open and came to find you on the floor. What happened to you?”

I try to sit up, but I can barely move. My limbs are swollen and sore. Remy sees what I’m trying to do and helps me into a sitting position.

“How long have I been out?” I mutter. My breath feels like someone has flown a hot air balloon into my mouth.

“Two days.”

A shot of adrenaline has my heart pounding. “Two days? The competition!”

“It starts this afternoon,” Remy says softly. “I didn’t want to leave you.”

My limbs are like lead bricks as I try to scramble out of bed. I can’t get to Jenny, but there are three women down there that might be able to and I need to be there to cheer them on. I also need to warn them about what Anthura has in store.

“Help me get dressed,” I say as I use my hands to swing my legs out of bed.

Remy watches with distress on his face as I try to stand. He helps take my clothes off, softly undoing buttons and removing each piece of clothing gently so not to hurt me. This is the first time he’s undressed me, I think bitterly. And it’s about the least sexy thing that’s happened to me. Probably to him too, seeing as there’s not a single part of my body that isn’t red, blotchy and swollen. There’s no disgust in his face as he helps me into my clothes. There’s no desire either. Why is it that I finally find a man who wants me and I look the most disgusting I ever have, the second time he sees me naked. I push the thought to the side as he takes my hand and helps me down to the restaurant.
