Other important SCADA communication protocols that are still widely used are IEC 60870-5 and Modbus. While features will vary to some degree, these protocols functionally provide reliable communication within an “open” architecture which allows ease of use and scalability for expansion.

Fieldbus Networks: General Characteristics

In general, “fieldbus” denotes a type of network that uses RS-485, now referred to as EIA-485, types of cabling media. Using IEC 61158 as the standard, these cable and connection devices are built to meet specific electrical characteristics regarding capacitance, resistance and current capabilities. Normally this is “twisted-pair” wiring with an additional wire for drain or ground reference, and usually a braided shield within the protective jacket. In some wiring scenarios a “multi-pair” cable is used and, in the case of “ControlNet” wiring, RG-6 coaxial cable is used. Below are examples of single pair and multiple pair fieldbus types of cables. The ControlNet wiring will be included later in the section.
