Property Protects Our Other Rights

The Founders insisted that if you don’t enjoy a right to property, you won’t enjoy the other ones, either. They understood that our right to property is an extension of ourselves and our liberty. John Adams said that property “implies liberty because property cannot be secure unless he have his personal liberty of life and limb, motion and rest for the purpose.”3

The right to property not only protects our freedom; it also limits government. Property rights protect you from others and dictate how the government may interact with you. If millions of people own their own homes, cars, land, clothes, and labor, then much of our daily life is outside the government’s jurisdiction. If the government wants to take your land to build a road, for instance, it has to compensate you fairly. It can’t just push you and your family off the property. If we enjoy no right to property, we’re at the mercy of either the strongest person or an all-powerful state.
