Prisoners

James and Noah sat in the Perlman’s mobile home, talking. Hannah slept peacefully in her crib while James and Noah played a game of Uno with James’ kids. It was normal for the children to be boisterous playing the game, but the baby was sleeping and Noah was struggling not to worry. The children sensed his tension, and were much more subdued than normal.

“They’re no doubt having problems with the range. Those radios are pretty good, but they don’t always pick everything up. Give her a couple of minutes and try again,” James said. “She did take a radio, right?”

“I’m sure she did,” Noah replied. “The number two slot on the charger is empty. I made sure it was in the charger last night so it would be up to full power, and I watched her take it out this morning and clip it to her belt.”

“They’ll be fine, Noah. Trust me. Give them a minute or two to get back into range.”

“Red seven. Your turn, Daddy,” Allen said.

“Okay, son, hang on a minute.”

“I don’t know. Something about this doesn’t feel right,” Noah said. “If it wasn’t for the fact that Jon and I needed to go into New Castle this morning to meet Thurgood, I’d never have let her go alone.”

“She’s not alone, man. Susan and Ashley are with her. They’ll be fine.”

“Crap, come on, Rachel. Reply!” Restless with anxiety, Noah ran his fingers through his hair and tried the radio again.

“Greensboro Two, this is Greensboro One. Rachel, this is Noah, second try. Are you guys on your way home yet? If you read me, reply now. Please. Over.”

There was nothing but the sound of static.

“Noah!” Susan screamed. “Noah, we’re here. Help!”

“Shut up. He can’t hear you. You women are so stupid. Grab that radio, Junior. We can use it to monitor whoever is on the other end.”

I can’t let that happen. I need to stop them. Susan lunged free, dove for the radio, and grabbed it before the men could react. In desperation, she threw it as hard as possible against the fender of the overturned Ford. It hit hard and shattered into pieces. Hinson grabbed her, pummeled her, and she blacked out under the hail of blows.

“Listen,” Noah said, holding his hand up for quiet.

“I don’t hear anything,” James replied.

“That’s what I mean. There was a lot of static before, but now there’s nothing. It’s silent, like they shut the radio off. Something’s going on. I’m going to check on them if Jon will let me take the Rezvani. Wanna come along as backup?”

“I guess. Let’s find someone who can watch the kids. Shoot! This was supposed to be a ‘Daddy’ day. Let me run up to the house and ask. I’ll be right back.”

After talking to Jon and asking Lucy if she would mind looking after the kids for a bit, Noah and James gathered their equipment as quickly as possible and climbed into the Rezvani. Jon met them in the driveway as they were about to pull out.
