The Children Sold
The DocÂtor came back from New York, of course withÂout acÂcomÂplishÂing his purÂpose. He had exÂpendÂed conÂsidÂerÂable monÂey, and was rather disÂheartÂened. My brothÂer and the chilÂdren had now been in jail two months, and that alÂso was some exÂpense. My friends thought it was a faÂvorÂable time to work on his disÂcourÂaged feelÂings. Mr. Sands sent a specÂuÂlaÂtor to ofÂfer him nine hunÂdred dolÂlars for my brothÂer William, and eight hunÂdred for the two chilÂdren. These were high prices, as slaves were then sellÂing; but the ofÂfer was reÂjectÂed. If it had been mereÂly a quesÂtion of monÂey, the docÂtor would have sold any boy of BenÂnyâs age for two hunÂdred dolÂlars; but he could not bear to give up the powÂer of reÂvenge. But he was hard pressed for monÂey, and he reÂvolved the matÂter in his mind. He knew that if he could keep Ellen till she was fifÂteen, he could sell her for a high price; but I preÂsume he reÂflectÂed that she might die, or might be stolen away. At all events, he came to the conÂcluÂsion that he had betÂter acÂcept the slave-tradÂerâs ofÂfer. MeetÂing him in the street, he inÂquired when he would leave town. âToÂday, at ten oâclock,â he replied. âAh, do you go so soon?â said the docÂtor. âI have been reÂflectÂing upÂon your propoÂsiÂtion, and I have conÂcludÂed to let you have the three neÂgroes if you will say nineÂteen hunÂdred dolÂlars.â AfÂter some parÂley, the tradÂer agreed to his terms. He wantÂed the bill of sale drawn up and signed imÂmeÂdiÂateÂly, as he had a great deal to atÂtend to durÂing the short time he reÂmained in town. The docÂtor went to the jail and told William he would take him back inÂto his serÂvice if he would promÂise to beÂhave himÂself; but he replied that he would rather be sold. âAnd you shall be sold, you unÂgrateÂful rasÂcal!â exÂclaimed the docÂtor. In less than an hour the monÂey was paid, the paÂpers were signed, sealed, and deÂlivÂered, and my brothÂer and chilÂdren were in the hands of the tradÂer.
It was a hurÂried transÂacÂtion; and afÂter it was over, the docÂtorâs charÂacÂterÂisÂtic cauÂtion reÂturned. He went back to the specÂuÂlaÂtor, and said, âSir, I have come to lay you unÂder obliÂgaÂtions of a thouÂsand dolÂlars not to sell any of those neÂgroes in this state.â âYou come too late,â replied the tradÂer; âour barÂgain is closed.â He had, in fact, alÂready sold them to Mr. Sands, but he did not menÂtion it. The docÂtor reÂquired him to put irons on âthat rasÂcal, Bill,â and to pass through the back streets when he took his gang out of town. The tradÂer was priÂvateÂly inÂstructÂed to conÂcede to his wishÂes. My good old aunt went to the jail to bid the chilÂdren goodÂbye, supÂposÂing them to be the specÂuÂlaÂtorâs propÂerÂty, and that she should nevÂer see them again. As she held BenÂny in her lap, he said, âAunt NanÂcy, I want to show you someÂthing.
