Chapter Ten

Dallan’s place at the table was set as it had been every night, and he was becoming familiar with everyone’s likes and dislikes and homework projects and extracurriculars. He and Oscar did the dishes together, David helped Rhian and Arthur with their homework, and Saoirse relaxed with a glass of wine on the porch watching Viva work in her little garden.

The ugliness faded to the merest background radiation when they had come downstairs, and he was swallowed up by this little world of theirs. It felt like home, like when he was still mortal and had a holdfast of his own, full of life and messy and chaotic. It’d become a habit, of late, imagining David in his world, safe and healthy and loved, especially after the brutal reality of the night before and the rawness of David’s self-loathing.

He must have been a million miles away, because Oscar had to nudge him and wave a wet plate at him to get his attention. “Saying you’ll dry only counts if you, you know, dry.” But the boy was grinning a teenager’s know-it-all grin. “I’d say penny for your thoughts, but I bet I can guess.”

“Cheeky.” Dallan grinned though as he took the plate and dried it and then sat it on the shelf. “And also the last thing you need to be worrying about, bright young thing like you.”

“Actually, Dallan…” Oscar looked over at him through his fringe of unruly dark hair and worried at the piercing in his lip with his teeth. “It’s a gorgeous night.” The window right in front of them shone with the light of a gibbous moon, clear and bright. “Take a bottle of wine, take him down to the beach… Seriously.”

“It’s not that simple, lad.” No one in the house talked down to the kids, and Oscar was clever and too worldly for his sixteen years. “I think you know that.”

“I know that you’re in love with him, and he’s in love with you. And I know that you belong here, with him, and that you’re actually good enough for him. You’re great for him, in fact. I know he’s been hurt, hurt really bad, but you’re patient…” Now that he was on a roll, Oscar didn’t even take a breath.

“Thank you, lad. Really. It means a great deal to me that I’m accepted here, that you think I’d be good enough for David.” Dallan took the next plate that Oscar had washed without realizing, hands moving on their own. “Let me think on it, hm? See how he is later.”

“Fair enough. Just…you have to understand. When David found me and brought me here, he looked me in the eyes and told me that there was nothing wrong with me. That I was good, and pure, and exactly as I was formed to be, and that I should never be ashamed. But he doesn’t believe that about himself. I know he doesn’t. He thinks he’s the unworthy one.” Oscar’s voice had dipped down to a low whisper.
