That evening we watched on television the ending of the Vietnamese war as the U.S. completed the evacuation of encircled Saigon. The long and wretched U.S. involvement was over. The next morning, though he had not slept too well, he spoke of “ecstatic energy in my head” and said he had never had it before.

He certainly gave outward signs of extraordinary energy in the second session of the psychotherapist meeting. It was a continuation of the previous day and began with the question: Can thinking know when thought is relevant? K asked, what was relevance? Reality was that which you think about; was truth to be thought about? He said there was knowledge, reality, and truth. Truth had nothing to do with the real; was there action not based on knowledge? He said that all our actions were based on concepts projected by thought, and therefore all action is non-action. He asked if there was an action, which was not analytical but perceptual, not acting according to conclusions. And he asked if they saw that analysis was not whole. He spoke of Vietnam and asked, “How do we observe it? If you are not different from it, you are responsible for it. As long as I remain a Hindu, I create war. When there is division, there must be conflict, as long as I have a formula, a belief, I create division. The negation of division in me is whole action.” Then he questioned there being such a thing as psychological security. We need physical security, but because we seek psychological security, we invest it in things—my house, my wife, etcetera. “I seek psychological security in another and find it in an image I have created about that person. I question there is any security for ‘the me.’” One questioner said, “We reinforce what the patient brings in.” Another disagreed and said, “Eventually, we negate the divisions.” K then said that brought in time. “Discarding means negating now, not in the future.”
