Following on from the summing up, the official stenographer notes the end of the trial:

THE CLERK OF ASSIZE: Members of the jury, will you please consider your verdict.

(The jury retired at one o’clock.)

(The court adjourns for lunch from 1.30 to 2.15).

(The jury returned into court at 2.15)

MR JUSTICE WRIGHT: I regret very much, members of the jury, if I’ve kept you waiting, but the court was adjourned owing to a misunderstanding.

THE CLERK OF ASSIZE: Members of the jury are you agreed upon your verdict?

THE FOREMAN OF THE JURY: yes.

THE CLERK OF ASSIZE: look upon the prisoner. How say you, do you find Louie Calvert guilty or not guilty of murder?

THE FOREMAN OF THE JURY: guilty, my Lord.

THE CLERK OF ASSIZE: you find her guilty, and that is the verdict of you all.

THE FOREMAN OF THE JURY: yes.

THE CLERK OF ASSIZE: Louie Calvert, you stand convicted by the verdict of the jury of a charge of wilful murder. What have you of yourself to say why the court should not give judgement of death, according to law.

SENTENCE OF DEATH.

MR JUSTICE WRIGHT: Louie Calvert, the jury, after very careful hearing, have found you guilty of the murder of Lily Waterhouse. For that crime there is only one penalty known to the English law and it and it falls to me to pronounce the sentence of the court.

The sentence of the court upon you is there to be taken from this place to a lawful prison and thence to a place of execution, and that you be there hanged by the neck until you are dead, and that your body be afterwards buried within the precincts of the prison in which you shall have been confined before your execution, and may the Lord have mercy upon your soul.

THE CHAPLAIN: Amen.

THE CLERK OF ASSIZE: Louie Calvert, have you anything to urge to stay execution of this your sentence?

THE PRISONER. Yes. I am pregnant.
