We don’t serve a miserable, sorrowful God. The longer I’ve known Him and experienced His presence in my life, the more authentically I laugh—because there is more joy and pleasure in His presence than in any other person or place or circumstance I’ve ever known. Suffering with Jesus has seasoned my laughter and grown it large with hope and freedom and peace I didn’t have twenty years ago. When I laugh now, it’s as if my heart is saying, “Pain, you haven’t won! Grief, get back in your place. God is writing a good story, and He wins in the end!”

Dear sufferer, we laugh because He made us in His image—and He laughed first. He is a God of laughter. He smiles more than He frowns. He rejoices over us. He delights in us. He spreads a feast for us. And suffering is one way He draws us deeper into Himself and further into His joy. An easy, comfortable life might actually be the biggest hindrance to a life of rich and beautiful laughter—but suffering in Jesus’ presence is the secret to why we “can laugh at the time to come” (Prov. 31:25).
