The Russians were able to make greater progress in Austria-Hungary, entering the Carpathian Mountains and threatening an invasion of Slovakia and even Hungary. It was only the Gorlice-Tarnow Offensive discussed below which reversed this situation, driving the Russians back from most of Galicia and indeed Russian Poland too. If the Austro-Hungarian troops had been sufficiently strong to prevent the invasion of Galicia let alone if they had been as good as their German counterparts, then the Russians would have been stymied along the Eastern Front by the Autumn of 1914.
