__________

I resumed at the new office to relieve a guy named Felix who had gone on vacation. It was a small branch located in a densely populated semi-urban area. Transactions were large in number but low in volume. The branch was grossly under-staffed and that’s why they needed a backup from another branch. I met Lilian Saraf the Head of Operations, who introduced me to other staff in the branch.

Lilian introduced me to Hakeem Ali, the person I was supposed to be working with. We were both to report to her but he assumed authority over me because he was a step higher than me on the payroll and he had been older in the branch. There was no expression on his face when Lilian introduced us, not even a “welcome to the branch.” I didn’t care either because I anticipated I was going to be there for only two weeks. Just as I was settling in at my desk Hakeem passed by and said to me,

“I expect cash report by 4 p.m. and I don’t want to hear any news of error from any of the tellers.”

Now I wasn’t wondering why he was giving me orders. I knew how the bank’s operations ran and I could also see he was trying to make himself feel good about being a supervisor but I couldn’t understand why I had to be responsible for the error from the tellers.

“But don’t you think the tellers should be accountable for their errors? That way they’ll pay more attention.”

Just then, one of the tellers, Nancy passed by and started chuckling. I don’t know why she did that but it must have pissed Hakeem off

“Really? Ok, let there be any errors and you’ll have the answer to your question in a query.”

Hakeem turned and went to his desk. That sounded like a subtle threat. I had my mouth open and I was staring at his back with surprise until Nancy knocked on my desk.

“Hi Brenda, kindly confirm this ticket for payment.”

I took the ticket from her checked all its details and handed it back to her.

“Done,” I said.

“He’s just a bully. That’s about what he does around here,” Nancy whispered to me.

I just smiled without saying anything. I hadn’t decided who I was going to be friends with. At the close of business there were no errors, thankfully, and the cash report was ready at 5 p.m. - an hour after Hakeem’s cut off time.

I didn’t like the branch. So many things were done against the stipulated bank policy and it was just risky working there and violating the company’s rules every day. I had been there for the second week and thought I was leaving very soon I felt I had to do something to correct the branch’s attitude towards company policy. I decided to raise my concerns with Lilian. When Hakeem went for lunch, I walked up to her and said,

“Hi Lilian, how’s it going?”

“Well, it pays the bills.” She said and looked up at me briefly.
