Chapter Twenty

Why Me?

Nate had just hung up the phone from speaking with Dak’s sister and helping her make arrangements for his funeral. It was decided that there would just be a small service at the funeral parlor for close family and friends. She was having his body cremated, so there would be no burial service. She simply wanted to get it over and done with. Her and Dak weren’t that close, but she felt it was the right thing to do.

Nate was especially feeling the stress on this day. He had finally managed to return all the phone calls he’d received over the last couple days. He’d lost some money with his security company because of lack of available manpower for his regular jobs, having taken most of his men and put them on the streets or on watch for him so he could find Leroy’s killer.

Bigger than all that, he’d had to go down to the precinct and get Click out of jail. Since Nate was officially Click’s supervisor, he needed to provide the proper document showing that Click was licensed to carry a gun. He hadn’t gotten any sleep because of all that he had to endure during the night. And the drive to take Click back to his car hadn’t helped his stress levels either.

“What the fuck, man? Come on!” Nate said, pissed. “I don’t need this shit from you right now! I got too much other shit going on to have to worry about you, Leroy, and Nyeem!”

Click just sat there staring intently at Nate.

“Keep your papers on you, and I wouldn’t have to waste time going through this bullshit!”

“Man, fuck you! You don’t run me, nigga! I’m a grown-ass fucking man!”

“Then act like it, nigga! This shit is for the birds!”

“Muthafucka, fuck you! I’m out here on these fucking streets, not you! You forgot about the grind in the streets? I’m the muthafucka still mixing it up with these niggas, while you sit back and give orders. You show up on the blocks once a month like some celebrity or some shit, and then you bounce! Fuck that! I ain’t about that planning-and-following-the-rules shit! I’ma do what I gotta do out here to get the muthafuckas that I gotta get!” Click yelled, banging his fist on the dashboard.

Nate was seething with rage. His head felt like it was gonna explode. “You know what . . . do you, Click. I know what I gotta do.”

Click waved his hand. “Whatever.”

“Yeah, what the fuck ever.”

It was now ten am, and Nate was running on steam. He needed some stress relief ASAP. His cell phone rang while he was still holding it in his hand. He looked at the caller ID and saw it was TJ.

“What up?”

“Where you at?” TJ asked.

“I’m on my way back to the crib. You here yet?”

“Yeah, I been here.”

“Where you at? Why you didn’t call me?”

“Because I knew you had a lot going on. I just checked into a hotel and got me some sleep.
