Chapter 27

Nettie walked into the apartment at three a.m. for the second night in a row. Maria lay in bed, appearing to be asleep, but she was far from asleep. Nettie went into the bathroom. Once she came out, she climbed into bed.

“So this how it’s gonna be, Netta?” Maria asked.

“Like how, Maria?”

“Like this.” She turned to face Nettie. “This right here. You coming and going as you please.”

“Maria, I’m grown. I do what I want to do. Don’t start. Obviously you didn’t hear me when I told you that everything I do is for us.”

“Oh, you mean like screwing men?” Maria asked sarcastically.

“Yes, like fucking men.” Nettie didn’t sugarcoat her answer. “I told you I will do some things you may not like. So what’s ya problem? I go both ways, Maria, and you knew that from the rip. Miss me with the bullshit, okay?” Nettie sat up.

“Oh, okay, mamí, that’s how it is, huh? I bust my ass for you and you do me like this?” Her accent thickened.

“Maria, come on! You can’t be serious? I can’t do this with you right now. I’m out here trying to get this thing off the ground, and you bending my ear back with the bullshit. No, Maria, I don’t need this right now. What I need is for you to be that down bitch you claim you are. What’s up with that?”

“I am that down chick, Netta. But I feel like you kicking me to the curb. I don’t feel like I am part of the team,” Maria said sincerely. Nettie fell back onto the bed.

“Get ya mind right, Maria, seriously. We about to kick this thing into overdrive and I need you focused. We need those dudes I was kicking it to. They some real cats. They’re cut from a different cloth. Don’t start tripping. It’s all gonna work out.” With that said, Nettie turned her back to Maria.

Maria looked at her for a few minutes longer and then she lay back down.

The next morning

Maria walked down the hallway of the apartment building after returning from the grocery store. She had gotten up early because she couldn’t sleep. She walked into the apartment, kicked the door shut behind her and headed through the living room into the kitchen.

When she got to the kitchen she screamed and dropped both grocery bags to the kitchen floor. Meat turned around when he heard her scream. Maria grabbed a knife from the knife caddy that sat on the counter and charged at Meat.

He grabbed her by the arms to keep her at bay.

“Maria! Chill out!” Nettie came running into the kitchen to intervene. “This is my boy, Meat!”

Maria stood there, breathing hard, staring at the huge man.

“You remember I told you I saw him the other day?”

“No, I don’t.” Maria continued to breathe heavily. “What is he doing here?”

“He is going to be a part of the team. Now calm down!”

Maria relaxed her arms and Meat removed the large butcher knife from her right hand.
