Carlo was worried. Worried about Tanji. She hadn’t answered his calls in four days. He didn’t want to be pushy or smother her, but he was running out of time to woo her and running out of peace-of-mind. She had his heart. He had to see her with his own two eyes. Look into her eyes and hear her voice in order to be sure that she was truly okay. Maybe she had decided not to be romantically involved with him, but he at least wanted to be her friend and look out for her for as long as he could before he left for good.

He had bribed a guy who was a manager at the resort to give him her address months ago. Carlo flew in from New York, and hailed a taxi to take him through town and to her house. As he stood on the front porch, he looked around – now that he was seeing it in the light of day, he saw that it was an old house in desperate need of some maintenance and repairs. He knew Tanji wasn’t wealthy but the house proved that she was living in worse conditions than he’d expected. It made him feel guilty and all he wanted to do was to help her. He rang the doorbell and a shocked but pleased Tanji answered the door.

“You again,” she said, doing her best to control the smile that tugged at the corner of her lips. As always, he looked gorgeous and polished; tousled shining black hair, baby blue eyes, chiseled jaw, firm but full-enough-to-bite lips, a crisp white designer button-down shirt covering the, black jeans with a perfect fit down his strong legs and across the back, and a gold and diamond Rolex glittering on his wrist. Tanji wore a white tank top and comfortable dark purple leggings.

“Me again. You know, you shouldn’t answer your front door without looking first.”

“I got so used to the delivery man bringing me your amazing gifts, so really you should blame yourself for me opening my door so quick. How’d you find out where I live anyway?”

“The usual method.”

“Such as?”

He only smirked.

“Nevermind, Mr. Moneybags. That was a stupid question. What are you doing here?”

“I was worried about you.”

“I’m fine, as you can see.”

“No woman in history has ever said ‘I’m fine’ and meant it. I have wonton soup. Are you gonna invite me in, or say fuck off?”

She bit her lip, then stepped back from the doorway and let him in. Once inside, Carlo realized that the house was a family home; portraits hung on the walls and many of the decorative items and furniture dated decades before Tanji was born. He could tell the place was full of history and had once been full of life. Seemed like a lonely place for Tanji to call home.

“Interesting place,” he commented. “Reminds me of my cabin on Seneca Lake.”

“It’s my grandmother’s house. She left it to me, and pissed off my mom in the process.
