CHAPTER SEVEN
WHEN the knock came on the barn door, Claire ignored it, absorbed by the painting in front of her. If it was Declan, she didnât want to see him, let alone speak to him. Perhaps it was Brett? Well, she was cross with him, too. She felt as though her brother had betrayed her by confiding in Declan. She knew it was stupid but she couldnât help it. If Brett was having trouble coping with things, why hadnât he talked to her about them? Sheâd always been there for him. Surely he trusted her?
âClaire?â
It was Mary. Sighing, Claire put her brush down and walked to the door. She opened it and went straight back to her easel, not saying a word to her sister. Regarding the painting before her, she decided the brown wasnât exactly the right shade and mixed some more paint on her palette.
âI guess that means I can come in.â Mary paused but Claire didnât respond. âOr I could go away if you prefer.â
Still no answer.
âOr I could just come in and talk to you and drive you so insane with my inane chatter that youâll stop shutting yourself off and talk to me.â Mary came in, closing the door behind her. She crossed to stand behind Claire and looked thoughtfully at what her sister was painting.
âWell, if a picture doesnât paint a thousand words, I donât know what does.â
âMeaning?â Claire regarded her picture critically. It was something sheâd been working on for a few weeks. A man and a woman sat at a table at an outdoor café, the woman looking away, the man imploring.
âThat guy looks just like Declan.â
Claireâs eyes widened in horror and she stepped back, bumping into Mary, to get a better look at her artwork. âNo, he doesnât.â But even as she spoke, she realised the product of her subconscious at work.
âOh, give it up, Claire. Youâre obviously hung up on the guy.â
âHow can I possibly be hung up on him when I hardly know him?â
âIt is possible. Believe me. Thatâs how I felt with Greg. He came into my life in such a rush and Iâve never regretted getting swept up in the wave of passion and desire.â
âThat was you. You were always the impulsive one.â
Mary shrugged. âSo whatâs the deal with Declan?â
Claire put her brush down and sighed. âI donât know.â
âHas he kissed you?â
Claire couldnât meet her sisterâs gaze and instead shuffled around, capping tubes of paint and cleaning her brushes.
Mary chuckled. âIâll take that as a yes. So whatâs the problem? You didnât like it?â
Claire put her brushes down and finally turned to look at her sister, despair on her face. âI donât know, Mary.â
âEither you did or you didnât, hon.â
âOf course I did and I want him to kiss me again, but the man makes me so mad. Do you know heâs taken Brett out for a game of golf?â
âElizabeth told me.â
âWhat?â She was stunned and hurt. âDid everyone know except me?â
Mary frowned. âIâm not sure whatâs wrong.
