Chapter Twenty-Two

Samantha

She was acutely aware of his presence next to her.

They’d eaten their fill of pizza, at which point she’d fallen back into the couch, more than content to simply relax. Things had been a little off, neither of them knowing quite what to talk about.

Sam could have brought up the encounter with the Cado, and everything associated with that. It would have been an easy talking point at least, but she preferred not to think of them.

Hopefully that’s the last time I’ll have anything to do with those bastards.

Three times was more than enough for her. They could all go to hell at this point. Sam was through with the Cado, she hated their guts. All of which meant that they didn’t make pleasant conversation.

So instead she turned on the television so that the two of them could just relax. That had been over an hour ago, with mostly silence in the meantime. Sache didn’t seem to have much to talk about either.

They were still on the couch next to one another though, and that closeness was starting to weigh on her. The comfier Sam got, the more her legs slid out into the center of the couch. Toward Sache. Much farther and she would start pressing up against him.

Sache was doing a great job of looking mostly at the TV, seemingly oblivious to their closeness. She kept glancing over at him however, and every so often she thought she saw an almost imperceptible turning of his head. Like he’d been looking at something other than the television and now had to refocus on it.

Was it her?

What else is it going to be dummy? The wall behind me?

She should go to bed. Get up, yawn, tell him thank you for the night, and then go to her room and sleep. Alone. That was the smart course of action. That’s how Sam had kept herself from getting hurt all these years. Distance. She’d learned how to maintain it, how to keep it and enforce it with an iron will.

If she didn’t, all the pain of what she was, of what she could never be, would come welling back up, and eventually drag her down into a dark place that she’d fought her way out of too many times to count. Every time it grew stronger. At one point she’d nearly lost herself to it.

Yet she’d never felt so enticed as with Sache. He was a magnetic force that grew stronger the closer she got to him. It had started off with a meeting of eyes in a hallway, two strangers walking past one another. Now he was here, on her couch, eating pizza with her, studiously pretending like she didn’t exist.

But why is he acting all tense and nervous? What does he have to fear, someone as gorgeous, ripped, toned and handsome as him? He should be used to women slobbering all over him. Yet he seems even more tense than I feel. What’s making him nervous?

The answer, of course, was that she was the one making him nervous.
