Chapter Twenty-One

Blede

He checked the address carefully, noting Kristin’s car in the driveway. This had to be the place then.

A quick check of the dash showed he was five minutes early. Blede shrugged, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. The fact that he was here at all was still a shock. Receiving the phone call from Kristin inviting him to come over for dinner had floored him, to the point he’d nearly dropped the phone.

After the way things had been left between them outside her shop, he’d never really expected to hear from her again. Maybe a goodbye. Instead she was inviting him over for dinner? And the tone in her voice. It had been, well, happy? Excited? Blede was more than a little confused as to what was going on.

That doesn’t mean I was going to say no! When an opportunity like that presented itself, he wasn’t going to turn it down. Not after the conclusions he’d come to over the past several days about who she was to him.

Best to keep that to yourself for now. Wait until the time is right. Don’t rush anything. You’ve waited this long to find her, what’s a few more weeks or months?

Blede was unusual for a dragon. In his forties now, he was still unmated, without children. There was a part of his mind that gnawed at him, that wanted to experience that life, but it had been denied to him, and he wasn’t going to fight fate. Life would give him an opportunity when the time was right, and it would be up to him to ensure that he didn’t screw it up.

So far, so good.

The clock hit six and he got out of the car, tugging the dress shirt back into place. The tight, non-stretchy pants were decidedly uncomfortable, but he’d wanted to look nice for Kristin.

Hence the khakis and polo, dress shirt and a fresh shave and haircut. This was his chance, his opportunity, and he didn’t want to waste it.

Resolutely ignoring the nervous shiver that ran down his spine, Blede walked up to the door and calmly knocked three times. Then he waited, holding his other hand up in front of him, hoping she approved.

Kristin must have been anticipating him—had she seen him pull up and then just waited for him like he’d been waiting for the clock? That would be awkward.

All those thoughts were forgotten as she pulled open the dark brown front door.

“Are those for me?” she gasped, eyes lighting up at the sight of the bouquet of flowers he held in his arm.

“Here you go,” he said dumbly, extending his arm toward her, attention elsewhere.

Kristin looked stunning. There was no other way to put it.

She’d donned a flowy burgundy dress that swayed loosely around her shins. It was cinched around the waist and then form-fitted from her chest up to her neck. A little cutout showed the barest hint of cleavage, but otherwise she was mostly covered up.

“You look amazing,” he stammered. Her hair was loosely curled and pulled down in front of one shoulder.
