“I didn’t know what else to do. I had to send for you. Perhaps you can talk sense into the young fool.” Lily was almost wringing her hands. “That young man wants to take his sister home with him. He is insisting they are leaving. He asked for his carriage to be called.”

“I wish I could allow him to do just that.” Georgina was torn. She had matters to attend to with Mr Flint. “I’ll talk to him.” She hurried from the kitchen and up the stairs.

She rapped on the bedroom door, pushing the portal open without waiting for permission to enter. It was her house after all.

“I believe you wish to leave.” She was speaking as she stepped into the room. She was trying not to shout and curse. “Is that your wish too, Clementine?”

“I don’t know what to do!” Clemmy felt torn in two. She hated that man Henderson but how could she break all ties with her twin?

“What do you think will happen to your sister if you take her home, Mr Winstanley?” Georgina folded her arms across her chest and stood tapping one foot. Surely he was old enough to understand just what would happen to his innocent sister should she step outside this house now.

“My sister will be protected. There is now no question of her marrying that man. I will never allow such a thing to take place. My sister needs the comforts of her own home. She needs the support of her family and those who love her at this time.” Christopher just wanted to remove the terrible pain from his twin’s eyes. His heart was breaking. He wanted her somewhere he could protect her.

“You have a great many servants on hand, do you not?” Georgina wondered if she could box the lad’s ears. He seemed so much younger than she at this moment.

“Yes, of course. Clemmy will be waited on hand and foot. She will be safe.”

“Think a minute.” Georgina’s voice was trapped behind her teeth as she fought the urge to scream. “You know what happened to your sister. You can see her cuts and bruises for yourself. What do you think will happen if you return her as she is to your home?” She hoped to goodness she didn’t need to draw him a picture. He was old enough to understand how society worked.

“Oh dear God, Clemmy!” Christopher sank back down into the chair he’d left when Georgina entered the room. He’d been grasping at straws. He stared at his twin with eyes that had aged noticeably since he’d arrived. “The lady is right – I can’t take you home.” The two stared at each other in frozen silence, the changes in their circumstances that had been forced on both of them becoming a terrifying reality.

“I can never return home!” Clemmy wailed. Her hand shot out, seeking her twin’s.

“Nonsense!” Georgina had no time for this. “If the matter is handled carefully – with discretion,” she glared at Christopher, “there is no reason for anyone to know what has been done to you.
