CHAPTER TEN

THEIR LITTLE GAME

“So the program director says to me, ‘You’re gonna be hated when the rest of the staff finds out you’re able to work from home on a daily basis’,” Denobria laughed over the phone.

“But he’s going to back you on this, right?” Curtis asked as he sat at the dining room table on the first floor inside the suite he and Kree were renting.

It was a few hours after Kree had unknowingly lost her pet. She and Curtis were enthralled in a game of chess, listening to music and sipping glasses of wine when Denobria called, unknowingly interrupting their quality time. Curtis had started not to answer, but he didn’t want his wife to grow suspicious so he told Kree to remain calm and quiet while he took the call.

“Of course he is, baby,” Denobria said happily. “I swear, Curtis, I never thought he would give me an opportunity to work from home! I can go out and actually find my own stories! I get to spend more time with the kids, I can cook every night—for whatever that’s worth,” the joyful wife laughed. “This is huge. There’s no telling what other possibilities may unfold. I just may be on my way to becoming a news anchor if I do a good job,” Denobria said proudly as she moved about in the kitchen inside her home.

“Well, it was a career goal of yours. Now you’re one step closer.” Curtis said proudly.

“That I am. We must celebrate when you get back from Oregon. How’s the trip going by the way?” Denobria asked as she pulled a tray of sliced apples and caramel sauce out of the refrigerator.

“It’s going terrific, baby,” Curtis replied as he eyed Kree walking around the kitchen quietly in her black, silk negligee and black heeled slippers with the fur on the top. “I miss being next to you already,” he added, the words spoken meant more for Kree as he smiled and blew her a kiss.

“I miss you too, as do your sons.” Denobria said lovingly as she grabbed the tray with the apple slices and exited the kitchen, steadily talking about her promotion. She was beside herself with a strong feeling of accomplishment that left her unable to cease talking about the events that had unfolded on her job.

“How my boys,” Curtis asked as Kree slid another glass of wine before him, rubbed his face and eased away. Curtis patted her on the rear as she walked off, making her blush.

“Your sons are driving me up the wall here, Curtis.” Denobria responded through light laughter as she entered the den and placed the apples and caramel sauce before her sons, who were sitting at a small table playing electronic educational games. “They’re playing their little games and waiting on dinner.”

“Playing their little game are they,” Curtis smirked as eyed Kree, who was cheesing herself. “Give them a kiss for me will you?”

“Okay. Now, how will we celebrate,” Denobria asked as she headed back towards the kitchen.
