While vetting the manufacturing process of a company that provides combination wind and solar power solutions, it became clear how important the manufacturing setup was toward competitive advantage. The company had its own factory and was in the process of expanding. This seemed counterintuitive, given the high cost of producing and testing some of the wind-related components; contract manufacturing seemed like the likely alternative. However, the majority investor had strong connections in China and was able to get much of the property granted for limited cost and low rate debt for in-country facilities. This alleviated immediate concerns around production costs, but the due diligence shifted toward the majority investor's connections.
