Abigail

After what felt like an eternity—but was just a little over a month—I closed the library doors after a job well done.

Almost everything that Tobias wanted to be boxed and prepped for storage was done; the only things left were the huge things that weighed three times my size, and I was simply incapable of boxing them myself.

Also, like the detail freak that I was, I created an inventory list and used color-coded note cards on each box for the movers. That way, everything would have its place in the storage unit, and if needed, Tobias could locate it easily.

Once I was satisfied, I moved on to the parlor across the foyer.

“Jesus, why so many busts?” I asked aloud to no one in particular.

Seriously, it was like a gallery dedicated to head-and-shoulder sculptures. Each one was carefully detailed, so lifelike that it was actually kind of unnerving. They perched atop dark wood pedestals, crowding the room like silent spectators. I walked through them completely on guard, as if suspecting one would spring to life and scare the shit out of me.

As I strolled through the room, it was as if their eyes followed me, lending an eerie vibe to the room that was hard to shake off.

Some were figures from history…or at least, I thought they were; the names on the plaques were names I’d never heard before:

Jonah Merchant, 1546.

Daphne D’Arello, 1675.

Samuel J. Perkins, 1846.

Were these Tobias’s ancestors?

Or, did he know these people personally because he’s a vampire?

I shook my head at the thought.

Don’t be silly, Abigail.

Each turn of my head introduced me to yet another stoic face. There was one who looked like a Greek philosopher, his marble eyes locked in eternal thought. Beside him was what I assumed to be a statesman, his gaze stern and unyielding. There was even a woman who had a crown on her head—even in marble form, she was regal and sophisticated.

It was an uncomfortable sensation, to say the least, feeling all of those inanimate eyes on me.

“I swear to God, if one of you jumps out at me,” I told them as if they could hear me, “I will push you off your stand. You’ll go in the trash instead of storage, you hear me?”

Great, Abigail. Yes, please keep talking to objects. That’ll show people that you’re not crazy.

As eerie as it was, there was an artistry to these statues that complimented the sculptor’s skill. They had captured each lock of hair, the subtle lines that framed the eyes, and even the folds of the skin at the neck.

It was the details that creeped me out the most.

I told myself I would work quickly in this room, already looking forward to the moment when I could put these creepy stone faces in crates and be done with them.

To help ease my discomfort as I worked, I slipped my headphones over my ears and used my phone to scroll through my playlists until I found my favorite K-pop station. I blasted the music to the point that it was almost unbearable, but at least it kept me distracted.
