Chapter Nineteen

Samantha

“You stole those flowers,” Lana muttered, standing in the doorway of my old bedroom. I’d started the arduous task of cleaning out the room so I’d have a place to stay, and the sunflowers were a nice addition.

“I didn’t steal them. They were meant for me, anyway.”

Lana shrugged. “You can’t be sure.”

“What do you mean?”

“The guy gets around.”

My stomach tightened. I knew Lana didn’t say it to be mean. Coming from her, it would be more of an informational tidbit than a stab. Now from Vera, it would be an entirely different story.

“Have you actually seen him get around, though?” I asked.

Lana smiled and took a few steps into my room. “No, I haven’t. I’ve just heard things.”

Now, my interest was completely piqued.

“What kinds of things?” I sat on the edge of my full-size bed.

“That he’s good at what he does.” Lana flashed a wicked grin.

“And who did you hear that from?”

She glanced around the room as if someone might hear. “Violet.”

My brows shot up in surprise. “They never did anything.”

Lana frowned. “Says who?”

“Says Garrett.”

“How did she even come up?”

“When he took me out to dinner, I ran into her. We exchanged numbers.”

“And you believe him?” she asked.

“I have no reason not to.” I glanced at the wall of boxes. “And it’s not like it really matters. I live in New York.”

Lana smiled, and softness etched her features like when we were younger. “That could make it more fun.”

“I suppose.” I let out a sigh and put my hands behind me and leaned back. “But then it could get messy.”

“It doesn’t have to be that way. You could just look at Garrett as a fun attraction out in Washington.”

I laughed nervously and shook my head. “That’s the problem. I’m not sure I could.”

Lana narrowed her eyes on me, studying my features. “You kissed him.”

My cheeks flamed and I shrugged.

“You did.”

“It might have happened, but only once.”

Lana moved into my room at lightning speed, shoved a pile of clothes off a chair, and took a seat.

“And you’re just now telling me?” She looked completely exasperated and so much like the sister I grew up with.

A seed of hope sprouted inside, and I grinned. “I didn’t want to jinx it.”

“Jinx it?” She shook her head. “How could you possibly jinx a kiss?”

I laughed. “I don’t know, but I’m sure if it can be done, I could do it.”

“Was he a good kisser?”

“Beyond...” I glanced at the sunflowers I’d stolen from the back of his truck and smiled. “It’s probably a good thing that I’m headed back to New York.”

Lana drew a deep breath and bit her bottom lip. “When do you think you’re leaving?”

“Trying to boot me out already?” I smoothed the comforter with my hands and looked up at my sister.

She let out a sigh and shook her head. “No, I’m really liking your company. It gets dull spending time with Vera all the time.”

“Don’t let her hear you say that,” I teased.

“I’m sure she feels the same way.” She shrugged.
