CHAPTER 13

Just a few days after our date night, I was back at Noah’s bar, sitting on a stool chatting away with Jake. Even though this was only the second time I have ever talked to the guy, he was becoming one of my favorite people to hang around with here in San Francisco. It was also nice to discover that under his good looks, he had a beautiful heart.

Since it was a quiet night, there was only a handful of people hanging around, which made it easier for us to share the worst dates of our high school years, and what kind of offers he got as a bartender almost daily. Some of them had the potential of making me blush so he had a little too much fun on that subject. Still, it was a good night. I was happy that I was making friends, and Jake was definitely a hoot to hang around with.

“Don’t think I forgot about our lunch plan, I just couldn’t find the time this week,” I said, when we finally stopped laughing.

“I’m not going anywhere babe, no need to hurry,” he replied back, cleaning the beer I sputtered when I was laughing just a few minutes ago.

I pointed to the clean surface. “You missed a spot here, pretty boy,”

I was having way too much fun teasing him.

Giving me the stink eye, he cleaned the spot. “If you can’t even handle a task as simple as swallowing, maybe you shouldn’t drink,” he said, trying too hard to look like he was angry with me.

I let out a noise close to snorting. “No way. I’m having too much fun hearing about your failures. Who would’ve guessed a guy like you could sit back and watch his date kiss another guy and then watch her leave with him at the end of the night?”

Pointing at myself, I added, “Definitely not me!”

“Yeah, yeah,” he said waving a hand at me. “I was young and probably checking out other girls at the moment. Her loss not mine.”

“Oh yeah, I’m sure you didn’t feel bad at all when she said: “You are a really pretty boy, but you are also boring. I’m sorry, I know you are sad, but this is life. You win some you lose some.”

“Because that’s what every seventeen year old guy wants to hear.”

For added measure, I shook my head, acting all forlorn. “Life was so harsh to a pretty boy like you, Jake.”

“I’m so glad that you are having this much fun on my account. Please keep going, don’t hold back now.” Narrowing his eyes at me, he waited for me to keep going, but I smiled innocently at him and picked up my beer to have a ladylike sip from it.

His lips twitching at the corners, he went to check on a few newcomers. As I was still smiling at Jake, I felt Noah’s hand slid around my waist, and I turned my head to catch his quick kiss on my cheek.
