What Happens to the Children?

Among those detained and arrested for their immigrant status are parents with unlawful status. Sometimes they are detained for a few hours, and sometimes for several months, or even years. This is particularly hard on their children, who do not know if and when they’ll have their parents back home. These children often stay with friends or relatives. If no one is available to care of them in the long-term, they may be placed in the child welfare system to live in a foster or group home. It is not uncommon for parents to be released early in order to care for their children. They will likely have to pay the bond, wear an EMD, and stay in the area until their deportation cases are resolved. There are cases, too, in which parents opt for voluntary departure. They are permitted to spend time with their families before leaving the country. This gives them the opportunity to make arrangements for their children: to take them along, or leave them with a second parent or relative. But keep in mind that, depending on the circumstances, deportation can be a long, drawn-out process. Just because someone’s been ordered to be deported doesn’t mean it’s the end. The ruling can be delayed, appealed, and even overturned.
