Just before dusk, armed with only the stakes that were strapped to my thighs and in my pockets, I found myself alone in a car with Liam and Alana. I had an earpiece in one ear and was wearing a tiny, hi-tech camera attached to the puffy vest I wore. I felt like I was on some sort of SWAT team. Which, I guess, was close to the truth. The tension in the air was so thick I could almost see the knife that was stuck in it, a mental image that again had Liam smothering a laugh with a cough. None of us had uttered a word since we had left the Manor, and we had been driving for twenty minutes. I recognised the streets we were winding through and realised that this nest was definitely an issue, as it was only moments from my new place, as well as my parents and a few of my sisters. I also had an unsettling feeling that it might be the nest where Will was living now. I had not expected to come face-to-face with him on my first night out, and I found myself shaking at the thought.

I noticed Liam watching me and shaking his head, reassuring me that this was not the nest that Will now called home. Alana saw this exchange from the back seat, and I could tell that this all just made her even angrier. We really needed to stop pissing her off, or one of us was going to end up dead tonight. Liam rolled the car to a stop, and my heart began to race. I started to realise I wasn’t ready for this. Liam turned to me, just looking me in the eyes, letting me know I could do this. From the backseat, Alana cleared her throat loudly.

“Sorry to interrupt yet another lover’s moment, but would the pair of you kindly tear yourselves away from each other for one moment so that we can discuss strategy?” The venom in her voice was so evident that I was convinced that one of us would be going home injured, at the very least. This was not a good start.

Five minutes later, I stood at the back of the house, Liam a few feet behind me, his attention split between watching the house and monitoring how I was faring. Alana had taken point and moved into the house as the sun was setting. Nervously, I watched as the first vampire burst from the house and hung back as Liam quickly dispatched her as another raced past them. I moved forward, prepared to take him on. The adrenaline had kicked at the moment I had stepped from the car, and it felt good to unleash the first punch. My opponent was momentarily knocked back, stunned. He righted himself, getting a good look at my face, and I could tell he recognised me as his lips curled up into a sneer.

“So, they’ve finally let her out of her gilded cage.
