Here we were; two klutzy gals from the outer boroughs amidst the lotus blossoms. The big difference is that by then she was a major star and I’m still low down in the credits. So Barbra started schlepping me along to parties… “I’m gonna bring my friend Sue… You mind if I bring my friend Sue Mengers, you’ll love her”… Being on Barbra’s arm immediately gave me clout. Heads turned. People started to pay attention. There was a certain freak appeal for sure: women agents were almost unheard of. And a woman agent who drank and swore and knew what she was talking about and looked fucking adorable? Come on, I was made for this place!
