Chapter Nine

Brim’s Island is what we called Brim’s magical house on top of the rocks. What Mama and I called it. It seems the perfect name for something so perfect that Brim built. Brim’s Island is so special that big companies would offer him lots of money for it. Brim always refused. “This is my home, and my home is not for sale,” he would adamantly tell each of them.

It is the perfect place to be in this moment, and I understand why Mama’s letter brought me here. This is where we laughed the loudest. This is where Mama became a kid, excited, and filled with a light that did not fade the entire time we were here. This is where we danced under the moonlight, played catch on the beach, and ate fried fish under the stars.

This is where we came to escape. Whatever problems we had when we came here, we always left feeling like nothing mattered.

Smiley wraps her arm around my shoulder.

“This is going to be the best time of our life,” she says, and as she pulls away, her eyes are gleaming. “I can feel it.”
