Judy squeezed his hand for all she was worth and gave a final push.

Finally their baby was arriving. "Here it comes!" the doctor all but shouted. "It's a—it's a girl!"

There was a feeling of such excitement, in the midst of professionals quickly doing their jobs. They joined this young couple in welcoming their dream. As the physician cut the cord, she continued, "She's here. You two kids are now parents . . ."

And then there was silence.

The doctor looked at the baby as she held her. Having delivered thousands of infants, she knew. . . . Tests would have to be done, but she knew. Quietly she handed this precious bundle to a nurse. Without a word she slipped off her gloves, took the new father by the arm, and escorted him into the hallway. Puzzled but totally focused, he took in every word.

"Your daughter looks healthy. But she will have limitations. There is a disability. She has Down syndrome."

He heard little else. The doctor may have said something about her telling Judy in a few minutes, and maybe

something about the need for him to be strong for his wife. But mostly it was a blur.

This gentle doctor gave him a hug and went back to the delivery room. With eyes unfocused, he stared ahead. Slowly he began to walk down the hallway. Tears were now welling. Quietly he cried as he looked out the window, seeing nothing—but feeling far too much.

Several minutes passed. He stared into the distance— his mind racing with thoughts and questions, his heart filled with pain and disappointment for the challenges his little girl would face.

Slowly he came back into focus. He looked down the hallway and said to himself, "Well—this isn't the child I expected, but now it's time to let that child go and meet our daughter."
