Good grief, what am I supposed to say now? She sits on the rock, with sunlight in eyes too dry, bits of sand clinging to cheeks that should be damp and are not. I know she won't cry. Her soul is bleeding, but she won't let it show. Not yet. Not here. And not to me.

Stubborn.

I should have known.

Still, I would help Kinna if I could. I would paint the picture of a future filled with hope and laughter, promise and purity, but she wouldn't believe me. Not yet.

So I say nothing. Instead, I hand her the silk tulip that she buried in the sand, and I came behind and dug up again. I wonder if she has any idea what it means, this symbol of her past, of her hope. I doubt it.

Still, she takes it from me. At first, I think she will throw it out into the waves, but she doesn't. She just holds it, as if she can't decide to keep it or cast it from her. As if she can't decide if I'm friend or foe.

But that's okay. I'm not here to make her happy. I'm here to make her think. And perhaps to make her remember.
