YOUR CHOICE
Anger isn’t wrong.
Anger can actually be a very good thing. People throughout history have become angry for very good reasons. Anger began powerful movements stopping injustices. The Bible is clear that even God gets angry. Anger in itself is not a sin. “Uncontrolled anger” is what we need to be careful of.
In other words, when you feel angry, what are you going to do about it?
I’ve read countless articles, chapters, even entire books on anger. Many experts jump straight to how to avoid losing control. I’m not knocking them—I’m even going to provide you with a few tips that have helped me. But first, we all need to understand something even more vital: We have a choice about how we respond.
I’m amazed how I allowed myself to react in the past.
Key words: I allowed.
It’s true. Whenever I lost my temper, it was because I gave in to the desire to lose control. It was the easy road. Instead of disciplining myself to exhibit self-control, I chose to go with what felt good at the moment.
Sure, some people might protest, “But I can’t help it.”
That’s entirely false. And I can prove it. Have you ever been in the middle of a huge fight at home where voices are raised, and then you receive an important phone call? Your voice changes completely.
I remember moments like this in my house, when voices were raised to the max:
“HOW COULD YOU EVEN THINK THAT!”
“EASY! YOU WERE BEING MEAN!”
“I’M BEING MEAN? LOOK AT YOU!”
Ring…ring.
“Hello, the McKee residence.”
Our anger is controllable. Some of us simply allow it because there’s no accountability. How will anyone know if we yell at our family? Yelling doesn’t leave any physical marks. That almost makes it allowable.
Let that sink in for a moment. Are the following actions acceptable?
• Hitting your kids
• Cheating on your spouse
• Pulling out a gun and shooting someone
• Yelling out racial slurs
