7.3.1. Time Dilation, Closed Timelike Curves, and the Return Trip Home

Some physicists and logicians have argued that it is not possible to visit a time period that predates the development of the time machine used to travel to it, since the device that allows this manipulation of spacetime does not yet exist. Others believe that travel beyond this point in the past is possible, but only back to the time at which the very first time machine was developed. However, it is difficult to imagine how a time machine would simply begin to disintegrate into all its original disarticulated parts as it approached the time at which it or any other time machine was first created, particularly considering that the time travel device—as well as everyone and everything in and around it—had already become dislodged from global spacetime within their localized reference frame.

While traveling backward through time, a time travel device becomes separated from the sustained forward trajectory of everyone else. Because of this temporal exodus, how far it goes while traveling backward should not be limited by any individual event that exists outside its localized reference frame, including the creation of the time machine or the conception and birth of anyone inside. Additionally, through the mechanism of time dilation—resulting from high-speed motion and/or increased gravitation—it may be possible to speed the rate at which a time machine moves backward through time, potentially allowing it to go even farther into the past at a faster rate.

Einstein’s theory of special relativity demonstrated how high-speed motion, relative to those in a rest frame, allows for time travel to the future. But, if a time machine moves at a high rate of speed while light cones are oriented toward the past—as measured locally by the observer—this would be expected to move the craft even deeper into that past and perhaps far beyond the origins of both themselves and their time machine. In other words, if a rapidly rotating disc with the right mass-energy-rotation parameters were to facilitate backward time travel, then sustained high-speed motion while spinning and while light cones are tilted toward the past may allow it to go even deeper into the future of that past.

Einstein’s theory of general relativity later demonstrated how this same time dilation effect can be achieved in high gravity. So positioning the time machine in a region of space with a sizeable natural or manmade gravitational field might also allow for deeper penetration into the distant past. Additionally, traveling at high speed or experiencing high gravity for some duration may be important for helping a time traveler return home after visiting the past. In this way, time dilation, resulting from high-speed motion and/or high gravity, would allow a time traveler to speed back through time to their original present, which may make getting back to the future a far easier pursuit than going backward through time.
