Ephrata Fan

The Grand Coulee ends at Soap Lake where floodwaters suddenly expanded into the broad Quincy Basin causing a sudden drop in the velocity of floodwaters. Today many huge boulders, some the size of small houses, lie scattered across the fan. Most are composed of basalt ripped out of Grand Coulee but there is also a small percentage of granitic boulders eroded from the upper end of the coulee. Rounding of boulders could be due to abrasion via rolling and bouncing along the base of the flood flow and/or inherited from in-situ surficial weathering at their upstream place of origin. Below: An especially large boulder of flood-deposited basalt entablature (circled above) is just one of thousands that came to rest on the fan.
