After the loss of Rob, people—friends and strangers alike—often said to me, “Everything happens for a reason.”

I refused to agree.

In fact, I would become frustrated with anyone who would utter those trite words. How selfish, I thought. How flippant, I thought. I felt they were being insensitive and pushing aside the pain. I didn’t get it. What were they talking about? What reason could there possibly be? I saw no silver lining amid the storm clouds of grief.

Why do I have to watch my kids grow up without their dad?
