Chapter 7
Your First Solo International Trip
Well, look at you! Weâve arrived at the pivotal moment. Youâve followed all the steps above and are ready to take your first solo trip out of the country. Go you!
Now, you wouldnât be human if you werenât scared about this one. Man, I was terrified when I took my first international trip abroad. But guess what? It was the most amazing trip of my life up to that point, and once I got home, I was hooked. Like an addict needing her next fix, I knew Iâd found that elusive something that made me so happy: Traveling the world, on my own terms.
I did a ton of research when I took my first solo international trip. It was imperative I stayed at a property that encouraged solo travel. For me, back in 2009, there werenât all the amazing co-living establishments that we have today (Roam, The Collective, Unsettled, etc.).
Iâd worked very hard at my medical sales job and won an all-expenses-paid trip to a destination of my choice, so I went to the Body Holiday in St. Lucia. They were adamant that they catered to solo travelers and boasted a sixty percent solo traveler patronage (the rest were couples and groups of friends on a getaway, etc.). It was also adults-only, which I preferred.
Upon arrival, I was met with such a wonderful reception. They informed me that every night there was a five p.m. mixer at the bar, and all other solo patrons were encouraged to attend so they could mingle. Dinner was promptly at six p.m., and they had a âcommunity tableâ where all solo travelers sat together so they didnât have to eat alone. It was just freaking awesome. I made so many friends on that trip who Iâm still in touch with today. All of them were solo travelers like me, and I love getting together with them for dinner when they pass through NYC! This first international experience made me realize that there is a home for solo travelers if we only choose to look. There are so many wonderful people who let go of their fears and doubts to travel the world, and each person brings something special to your life!
*Trap Alert*
As you begin to travel internationally, I want to alert you to a trap thatâs easy to fall into. Many people, when they search for solo-friendly destinations, think that an âadults-onlyâ destination is the same thing. It is NOT. In my mind, âadults-onlyâ can sometimes mean, âeveryoneâs on their honeymoon and youâre the one person there who doesnât have a partner.â
Now, as weâve discussed, these are old fears that arenât true, but thereâs no place to make you question yourself like a resort full of honeymooners. So, be careful not to confuse âadults-onlyâ with âsolo travelers encouraged.â
Also, remember that lesson about how others can only see you through their eyes? Well, get ready for all your married friends to tell you how fantastic their honeymoon resort was and how perfect it would be for your first solo travel excursion.
