The opposite of faith is not doubt—it is control. Faith requires stepping out of our comfort zones and letting God lead us forward into an uncertain future. Abraham was invited to leave his father’s house and take his family on a journey. Imagine how he might have felt when he asked God where they were going. “To the land I will show you” (Gen. 12:1) was an answer that may not have filled Abraham with confidence. I doubt he had an easy time trying to explain it to his wife, Sarah, either.

When Jesus called his first disciples to leave their family business in the fishing industry and follow him, I wonder if their father, Zebedee, like Ricky Ricardo, responded, “You got some splainin’ to do.” As far as we can tell, Jesus didn’t sit down and explain the plan for their travels, nor did he give hints about some of the basics, like where are we going? Who will we see? What will we eat? Where will we stay? Perhaps this was because faith isn’t needed when everything is spelled out for us.

Will every risk be successful? Of course not. But God calls us, like Abraham, like the disciples, to step out in faith, knowing he is with us. And we can be assured that the risks he asks us to take will bring adventure and with it the possibility of a better tomorrow that is very different from today.
