Daddy Didnât Want Me
by Marie Marjorie Labbe (Stage name: Marj Desius)
I feel like I have been fighting for life since before life began.
My family lived in a small town in HaitiâCroix Des Bouquet. It was a small village where people survived mostly on home-grown food and managing their own little piece of land. If they didnât own property on which to build their own place, they were considered really poor. My parents were staying in a small house that belonged to my grandmother at the time. It was normal in our culture for parents to help their children when they were just starting out.
One evening in early September 1983, my mother accidentally conceived a baby.
It was six weeks later, after missing her period, that she realized she was with child. She was worried about telling my father since they already had a three-year-old boy. My parents didnât have the best relationship at the time. The fighting was constant, as were the financial struggles. So Mother hid her pregnancy for a couple weeks. She was worried about being able to take care of my big brother and me, but she knew she wanted to keep me, so she decided to tell Dad the truth.
He was not happy! It was the early eighties, and as I said, my parents were under great financial stress. They were already struggling to take care of their little boy and pay for the basic necessities of life. News of another child coming was bad news. Dad wanted Mom to get an abortion. In my country, that was legal. People who wanted to end their pregnancies usually went to a midwife for help. Some used natural herbs at home, but at their own risk. Mom refused. She already felt a love for me, even though I was unborn. So she made the decision to keep me and fight to have me.
She made it clear to my dad that she was going to have me whether he wanted me or not. I guess she made him accept the decision as time went on, but it didnât help their relationship.

My dad was a tailor and made suits for a living. My family depended on his business for all our basic needs. If he did not sell a pair of pants or someone did not come to have a suit fixed, he didnât make any money for the day. His income was based on his daily prayers that someone would come into his little shop for one thing or another. Dad didnât have a big operation, and he never made a lot of money, but he made enough to feed us.

During the pregnancy, Dad once again put his foot downâhe did not think I should live. Knowing this, I felt unwanted, like I was a mistake.
One day, my father even tricked my mother and secretly put some strong herbs in her tea, attempting to induce a miscarriage.
