Chapter Eighteen

Tajel

There was no way to avoid this disaster. This was my house, so it was my problem. Sasha had a solid grip on my forearm, not allowing me to get out of my car. I slapped her hand, trying to free myself, but it was no use. Sasha was determined to keep me from going inside my apartment.

Sasha grunted in frustration. “Don’t go in there until your uncle arrives.”

“I called him, but I don’t need to wait for him.”

I finally freed myself and scrambled out of the car, slamming my car door shut. The music coming from my apartment could have been heard over a block away. It was so loud that it felt like it was causing vibrations in the pavement.

“I don’t understand what makes him think that what he’s doing is cool?” Sasha chased me up the stairs, probably planning another attempt to stop me from going inside.

A vehicle pulled up and parked along the curb of my street. By the low rumbling sound the engine made, I could tell it was my uncle’s truck. He jumped out, shutting the door with such force I thought for sure the glass of the window would break.

His order was directed at me, “You wait down here.”

I was in no mood to be told what to do. “This is my place. I’m going inside.”

My uncle skipped a few steps trying to catch up to us. He took the lead, putting himself in front of Sasha and me at the front of my apartment building. The door to my apartment was already ajar, and the stench of weed floated outside, causing the fury I’d been quelling to resurface. My brother and two others I did not know were sitting on my couch leaning toward my coffee table. They were slicing up their drugs and giggling like giddy children.

“Tyler!” My uncle opened the door fully.

Generally a calm person, my uncle’s composure was lost when it came to my brother. He stomped toward where they were seated – they were completely oblivious to our presence. He swiped an open soda bottle from the table, then proceeded to pour its contents all over my brother and his friends.

One of my brother’s friends pulled out a knife from his pocket, slashing it in the air to try to cut my uncle’s chest. Spotting the knife as it emerged from the man’s pocket, my uncle stepped backward to wait for an opening before landing a blow on the guy’s jaw.

“Yo!” Tyler shouted. “Bro, that’s just my crazy uncle!”

Tyler walked up to his friend who was still wielding a knife and hunched over in pain from the punch.

Tyler turned to our uncle and said with a chuckle, “Unc’, he was just messing with you.”

“What part of that was supposed to be a joke?” I fumed.

Tyler raised his arms defensively. “It’s no biggie, Tajel. Besides, you know how to save his life.”

My brother wasn’t bothered by the fact that a fight almost occurred that could have ended badly for either our uncle, or his friend, or both.
