23.3.2.8 Other Potential Contaminants

Other potential contaminants like phosphorus, metal–organic compounds, and so on can be present in specific fuel sources. However, to date their effects have not been so well investigated and thus they are not discussed in further detail here.

23.4 Pollutant Level Requirements

Table 23.5 summarizes the main impurities along with typical limits considered for safe operation of low and high temperature fuel cells. The values given represent the results of experiments performed at very different operation conditions. This is the reason why the ranges given are quite broad; depending on cell type and material, for different operating temperatures, pressures, current density, and so on the impact of certain contaminants changes tremendously. However, the lower value given usually represents a safe value for most operating conditions and cell types.
