ZARA

I’m the first one awake in the morning, and I seize the opportunity to sneak out of the house.

I have to go out through the bedroom window because most of the guys are piled up in the living room, and I don’t want to risk waking them. Getting by Chan, who’s in bed with me, is difficult enough—he’s a very light sleeper. But none of them is a match for my stealth. I leap nimbly up onto the windowsill, and a moment later, I’m out in the new light of dawn.

I wanted to be up first because I wanted to see Echo. I want to see how my blood is affecting her, what kind of impact it’s having. I want to draw my own conclusions about what it all means before the others have a chance to show up and make their opinions known.

When I get to the cage, there’s only one other person there, a shifter I don’t know. I can’t tell by the look of him what animal he becomes, either. He’s smaller and scrawnier than any of my mates. As I approach the cage, he leers at me like I’m something to eat.

“So,” he says. His voice is high pitched and sounds full of cruel mirth. “You’re the fae bitch who’s got everyone so upset.”

“Who the hell are you?” I ask him.

“I’m Jock,” he says. “I’m on guard duty here.”

“You’re not a wolf,” I say, hoping it’ll prompt him to give me more information.

It works. He lets out a cackle. “I’m a hyena,” he says. “The wolves and the bears think they run everything around here, but there are plenty of other species in Shifter Town, and we’ve got strengths they can only imagine.”

“And that’s why you take your orders from Aidan,” I say.

Jock the hyena bares his teeth. “You’d better watch your mouth with me, bitch,” he says. “If you’re here to let your friend out of the cage, you might as well forget it. But I’ll be sure to let Aidan know how you came on your own first thing in the morning to see her.”

“Tell him whatever you want,” I say, looking past him. If Aidan’s going to be inclined to believe some story this guy is making up about me, I’m pretty fucked anyway. “But she’s no friend of mine, and I’m not remotely interested in trying to get her out.”

“Then what are you doing here?”

“I wanted to see how she’s doing this morning.”

“Checking up on her well-being?”

I let out a dry laugh. “Hardly. I’m sure you’re aware of Aidan’s experiment? Or has he not let you in on what we’re trying to do here?”

Jock scowls at me, which isn’t an answer.

I sidestep him and approach the cage, careful not to touch the bars. They’ll burn me just as much as they would Echo.

She’s glaring up at me with bright eyes, and I’d be surprised to learn she’s slept a wink. “Hey, Echo,” I say as if we really are old friends. As if she didn’t just attack me and drink my blood yesterday.
